Competitions Information

Special Area Competition Participation

At the Spring Undergraduate Research Symposium, we will be hosting Special Area Competitions held alongside the research showcase. While all submitted abstracts will be automatically considered for participation in a subset of competitions based on subject matter, the remaining require separate registration below. Please read the following descriptions carefully and indicate if you would like to be considered for inclusion in these completions. For a full list of Special Area Competitions, please click here.

Biomedical Research Special Area Competition

This competition is for students in the life sciences and/or engineering who have conducted research related to preventing, diagnosing, or treating a human medical condition (i.e. illness, injury, or disease). The project should have clear biomedical relevance.

Public Health Research Special Area Competition

3Minute Research Pitch

The 3Minute Research Pitch is a competition that challenges undergraduate students to present a compelling verbal presentation of their research topic and its significance in just three minutes. The goal of this program is to develop academic, presentation, and research communication skills and support the development of undergraduate students' capacity to describe their research in language appropriate to a public audience.

Students compete by presenting their research topic in three minutes or less. Competitions are judged by a panel comprised of a diverse group of professionals (academic and non-academic) with a wide range of expertise.

Note: You'll be notified if you are accepted to this competion.

Engineering Special Area Competition

The Bagley College of Engineering is pleased to offer awards for the Undergraduate Research Symposium. Awards will be made in two categories: Cross-disciplinary Research, and Visual Display of Information. The solution to many future problems will require the application of knowledge and skills from multiple disciplines. An important skill for any researcher is the ability to communicate their research quickly and efficiently to a broad audience.

To be eligible, your project must meet the criteria for a Bagley College of Engineering Undergraduate Research Award:

1. Be completed under the supervision of a faculty member in the Bagley College of Engineering

AND

2. Have at least one member of the research team enrolled in a major offered in the Bagley College of Engineering

MSU Libraries Research Award

The MSU Libraries Research Award is designed to recognize undergraduate student research that incorporates the use of library resources and/or services. To be considered for this award, indicate your interest on the registration form and include a brief (150-250 word) statement regarding your use of library resources and services in your research project. The award is open to undergraduate researchers in any field. Projects are judged on the use of library resources and services, the originality of the work, and the presentation clarity.
